This is more than a model-year update. Here’s a look at what changed and why it matters.
John Deere has announced a major refresh of its P-Tier SmartGrade motor grader lineup. The new models span eight machines: 620, 622, 670, 672, 770, 772, 870, and 872. They add updated grade control technology, a redesigned cab environment, new and updated automation features, and improved visibility systems.
Next-Gen SmartGrade with Topcon and Leica Support
The most notable change on the grade control side is provider flexibility. SmartGrade now supports both Topcon and Leica solutions, which means contractors aren’t locked into a single ecosystem. If your operation already runs one provider across your fleet, you can stay with what you know. If a job requires a different setup, you have that option without swapping machines.
The system operates through the G5 10.1-inch touchscreen display, where operators can navigate between 2D and 3D solutions on one screen. Deere has also added grade control support outside the center saddle position, which allows for accurate grading in nontraditional blade configurations — a practical improvement for jobs that don’t follow a textbook setup.
For diagnostics, Wireless Data Transfer and Remote Display Access integration through John Deere Operations Center means dealers can help troubleshoot issues remotely, reducing downtime and avoiding unnecessary service calls.
Practical Automation Additions
Blade Flip, Auto Articulation, and Machine Pre Sets are standard across all P-Tier models. Beyond those, Deere has introduced several new features worth highlighting:
- Cutting edge wear: Operators set a baseline measurement on a level surface and can check blade wear at any point during operation. This makes it easier to plan edge replacements on your own schedule rather than discovering the problem during a job.
- Intelligent blade control: An assist feature that maintains blade level through grading operations automatically, reducing the need for constant manual correction. This is helpful for experienced operators and especially valuable for those still building their skills.
- SmartSaddle: A single button press moves the blade to the optimal saddle position, removing manual adjustment from a task that can eat up time and introduce inconsistency.
- Cross slope technology: Now available in both target and joystick modes, giving operators more control over how they manage slope adjustments on different tasks.
*Machine Damage Avoidance and Auto Pass are also available as part of the technology packages, adding protection for the machine and reducing repetitive operator inputs.
Updated Cab Design
The cab received meaningful attention in this update. Seating has been improved with optional heating and ventilation, and the armrests are easier to adjust — details that matter when an operator is in the seat for a full shift. Climate control and in-cab storage have also been upgraded.
On the controls side, a new 8-inch touchscreen serves as the primary display, six-wheel drive controls have been simplified, and switches are now centralized. The overall effect is a cleaner workspace where operators can find what they need without unnecessary searching.
Improved Visibility and Safety
Deere is now offering two optional camera systems on the new lineup: the Advanced Vision System and the Advanced Vision System with Dual Front Alley Cam. Both provide dedicated in-cab displays that significantly improve the operator’s view of the area around the machine. On congested jobsites or in tight working conditions, this kind of visibility helps prevent incidents and keeps everyone on site safer.
